In the second part of the presentation, Ms. Duke helps the children come up with ideas for a simple story, which she then draws for them at the easel. Teachers may want to look at her book Aunt Isabel Tells A Good One to see the outline she follows in moving from plot beginning to happy ending.

It’s very important that the children know what to expect when an author visits. Kate Duke suggests reading one or more of her books to them before she comes and discussing what authors and illustrators do. She normally doesn’t plan for a question-and-answer period, so if you want one, have the children prepare their questions beforehand, and let Ms. Duke know so she can shorten the program accordingly.
